TYLAN Takuda is an internationally renowned etcher and engraver from Japan. Born in Tokyo in 1978, Takuda has been a passionate and skillful artist since childhood. He has studied many forms of etching and engraving techniques throughout his life to perfect his art. TYLAN Takuda works primarily in intaglio, which is a printmaking process of making an image below the surface of a plate or a block. He uses a variety of techniques to create graceful yet powerful drawings and illustrations with his etching tools, such as aquatint, mezzotint, drypoint, and engraving. One of his signature techniques is "metal grinding," a process where metal is scraped and polished in layers to create a unique, rich texture. Takuda's use of color, light, and contrast is highly sophisticated. He primarily works with a range of blues with strokes of white, allowing the light to reflect off the plates creating a subtle yet accurate illusion of water or wind currents. He also works with scene-like representations, often featuring nature, Asian-inspired landscapes, and occasionally religious motifs. His pieces often have an almost cartoon-like or painterly quality to them, making them stand out from many of his contemporaries. TYLAN Takuda's work has been exhibited in galleries around the world, including Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, Canada, and Germany. He has won several awards and prizes, including the "Geijutsu Shinwa Chosei" award at the Tokyo Art Academy in 2015, and the US-Japan Cultural Exchange Special Prize at the Takahashi Memorial Hall in 2017. Takuda's work can be seen in many of the world's finest collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art, and the Portland Museum of Art. His beautiful etchings and drawings continue to inspire and mesmerize viewers around the world.
