UNIVAC 1250, a pump developed by UNIVAC Corporation in the 1950s, was a centrifugal pump designed for a variety of industrial and commercial uses. It was a three-stage horizontal pump that featured a single row, multi-stage impeller and a radial split seal arrangement. Manufactured in a variety of sizes, 1250 was capable of producing flow rates up to 8,000 gallons per minute (GPM). UNIVAC 1250 was made up of a double suction impeller housed inside a volute casing. The double suction enabled the pump to maintain its performance and efficiency during operation by ensuring smooth flow. The impeller was designed with four vanes, which were cut back at an angle to create pressure and a secondary, boost vanes. The vanes provided positive lift and increased the suction capacity of the pump. The volute casing, or diffuser, was designed to coordinate the flow of liquid out of the volute and prevent cavitation. The volute casing was also made of a durable and corrosion-resistant material to ensure a prolonged life of the pump. 1250 also featured an adjustable radial split seal arrangement. This allowed for easy servicing and maintenance without requiring the removal of the casing and impeller. The arrangement consisted of two water-cooled, self-adjusting seals or ears that contained carbon ringed-seals and aligned the two components without disassembly. Additionally, the impeller was also adjustable, allowing for optimal output flow performance. UNIVAC 1250 had a low carry-over design that allowed for minimal liquid carry-over into the atmosphere. Its design also allowed for a high outlet pressure and a low net positive suction head (NPSH). The overall efficiency of the pump ranged from 65 to 85 percent, depending on size and flow rate. 1250 was the perfect centrifugal pump for a variety of uses including; chemical and petrochemical processing, water treatment, metal finishing, beverage production, paper production, and many more.
