HIKE DD-1223NV is a light water nuclear reactor of the pressurized water reactor (PWR) sub-type, and is designed and constructed by Hiroshima Prefecture Energy Innovation Center (HIKE). The reactor has a thermal output of 854 MWt. It is a vertical cylindrical containment vessel with a radius of 10.5 meters and a height of 30.6 meters, capable of containing over 2700 tons of pressurized water in its operating conditions. The pressure vessel is surrounded by a cylindrical steel pressure-controlled vessel, containing all the control rods and other essential components used to control the operation of the reactor, and a containment structure to protect the public in the event of any accident that may occur due to malfunction of the reactor. The containment structure is constructed using reinforced concrete with an average thickness of 1.2 meters. The containment vessel is surrounded by a central pool of boron-containing moderator water, which is used to slow down the neutrons from the nuclear reaction in the reactor core. The pool has a volume of 1.3 million liters and is filled with light water. This pool acts as a source of cooling for the nuclear fuel used in the reactor, and also provides emergency personnel with an easy access point to the reactor core to control and shutdown the reactor in case of an accident. The reactor core consists of fuel assemblies made up of uranium rods that are contained in a hexagonal-shaped metal lattice. A number of Control Rod Drives and Measurement Systems control the amount of reactivity in the core, and Reactivity Monitoring, Computerized Feedwater Regulating and Ventilation Systems assist in maintaining and controlling the reactor's performance. The reactor also has a waste heat cooling equipment that is necessary for the safe operation of the reactor. The cooling system uses an inlet temperature of 5°C and an outlet temperature limit of 10°C to ensure that the safety of the reactor is not compromised. The reactor's cooling unit has three stages - Plate Heat Exchangers, Boiling Water Reactors, and Dry Well Exchangers. Standby Diesel Generator, Residual Heat Removal machine, Safety Isolation Valves, Backup Isolation Valves, Control Rod Control Tool, Emergency Core Cooling Asset and a Fire Suppression Model are some of the safety features that come with DD-1223NV reactor to ensure the safety of the personnel and the public alike. HIKE DD-1223NV reactor is designed and constructed with both safety and performance in mind, and has been tested and is certified to be used for commercial power generation and research. Operated by a highly competent and well-trained personnel, DD-1223NV reactor is a reliable and safe choice when it comes to nuclear power generation.
