RPA P-138 is a pressure vessel type nuclear reactor developed in the early 1980s by the Russian Institute of Physics and Power Engineering, or IPPE. This particular unit was intended to be a commercial-scale research facility for the production of medical isotopes. This reactor is constructed from stainless steel and can operate with up to 135 megawatts of thermal power. It has a water-cooled equipment which is totally enclosed, providing excellent containment. The power raising system of the reactor includes a series of steam accumulators that produce thermal energy for the reactor's operation. P-138 utilizes a three-loop, full-power unit design that allows it to operate with a high level of safety and efficiency. The machine is fed by liquid sulfur hexafluoride heated to a supercritical state, which is then circulated through the channels of the reactor core to produce a controlled chain reaction. The coolant of the reactor is boron-doped water, and this is pumped through the core while the fuel is kept in a safe and controlled temperature range. This ensures reactor safety and operability. The reactor can operate continuously, up to the point of fuel depletion, in which case the reactor is manually shut down for refueling and maintenance. The reactor's control tool consists of both manual and automatic systems that monitor the reactor's parameters and adjust the fuel supply rate and other variables accordingly if required. The integrated safety systems are tested regularly and the reactor has an emergency shut-down asset that can be activated in the event of an unexpected situation. RPA P-138 has proven to be a reliable and efficient reactor that has had successful operation providing radioactive nuclides for medical and research purposes. By utilizing the latest technologies and materials, P-138 is able to maintain safety and reliability at a relatively low cost. With its flexible design, this reactor has been a source of consistent operation for decades.
