WONIK IPS AKRA is a self-contained, non-explosive, high-performance, high-capacity nuclear reactor used for power generation or research purposes. The reactor is a Generation IV Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) and operates at a maximum thermal power of 165 MW. AKRA is designed to have the highest safety, reliability and efficiency when compared to other SFRs . WONIK IPS AKRA uses a liquid sodium coolant which is circulated at low pressures to reduce the risks associated with storage and maintenance of the equipment. The core contains uranium fuel assemblies with a burnup of up to 75 MWd/kg. The fuel is enriched with up to 20% U-235 and gets recycled up to seven times. The reactor contains a primary cooling circuit loop and a secondary cooling circuit loop. The primary loop circulates a sodium coolant at temperatures up to 500°C. The secondary loop circulates a solution, such as a phosphate or boric acid, at temperatures up to 300°C. The core of AKRA is surrounded by a concrete shield wall, made of a combination of reinforced concrete and natural concrete. The thickness of the shield wall varies in different sections and provides adequate protection against gamma radiation and neutrons. The containment dome is made of multi-layer steel and lead block, and is capable of withstanding overpressure of up to 25 bar during testing or operations. Additionally, WONIK IPS AKRA has safety systems that respond to conditions such as power swings, neutron flux density, or coolant temperature or pressure imbalances. It also contains a passive shutdown system that initiates a safe shutdown in case of an emergency. AKRA provides a highly reliable, flexible, and efficient power source with adequate safety features. It is designed to meet high standards of nuclear reactor safety, with a high level of automation and maintenance requirements. The reactor also has the potential to be used for research in several areas such as materials science, nuclear science, and nuclear safety. WONIK IPS AKRA has a high fuel-to-heat efficiency ratio and is capable of producing clean, carbon-free energy at an economical cost.
