Scanning electron microscope.
HITACHI S-2300 is a scanning electron microscope (SEM). It is a low-vacuum instrument with a chamber pressure of between 0.1 and 0.001 mbar. It has an in-lens magnetic pole piece that can be used to guide the field emission source electron beam and a miniature condenser lens with a short focal length to reduce space-charge effects. The sample is placed in the chamber and the beam passes through the sample to the secondary magnification optics. This provides an image of the sample which can be viewed directly on the display or digitally captured. S-2300 offers two scanning modes; line-scanning mode (LS) and stigmatic mode (SM). It has a low beam current of 20nA in the LS mode, and 10nA in the SM mode, enabling imaging of delicate samples. The microscope is equipped with an Everhart-Thornley cold-field emission gun, which displays higher resolution due to its short divergence and small spot size. HITACHI S-2300 also offers various functions for accelerated imaging and analysis. Features like a turbo-scan mode and sample auto-tracking option make it easy to image large samples quickly. In addition, it is equipped with a built-in Peltier cooler for temperature control. S-2300 is capable of performing analytical processes, such as electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). It is equipped with an EBSD detector which operates with a spot diameter as small as 1 um. Moreover, the EBSD and EDS functions are integrated into the same detector head for ease of use. HITACHI S-2300 offers advanced software for image and data processing. It supports various kinds of imaging and analysis software, such as Auto ImageCore and ImageJ. With these, users can capture, store, process and analyze images and data, leading to better insight into samples' structural and elemental compositions. Finally, S-2300 is capable of 'live imaging', whereby the user can observe sample surface features in real-time. This feature is particularly useful for studying processes such as corrosion or the motion of cells. Compatible with a wide range of SEMs, HITACHI S-2300 also has a full range of specimen preparation accessories to further enhance its capabilities.
