QUESTER / ALCANTECH APT 6000HP is a high power thermal neutron research reactor utilized in advanced nuclear energy research and development. It is a graphite moderated, water cooled core design with an Xe-135 based, novel active source supported by a beryllium reflector for neutron moderation and shielding. As a leading research reactor, QUESTER APT 6000HP is capable of delivering up to 6 MW of thermal power for both prototyping and advanced measurement work with an extensive range of neutron sources and applications. The reactor is further able to provide neutron energy from 4 eV to 60 keV and offers a range of convenient control instruments and a safety monitoring system. ALCANTECH APT 6000HP reactor also has a high neutron flux supporting both neutron beam experiments and nuclear transmutation experiments. The reactor is designed to fulfil both sustained and pulsed operation and offers a range of capabilities for performing irradiation experiments in-core and ex-core. Furthermore, it is able to support both endo- and exo-thermic fuel burning experiments, performance tests of safety related components, irradiation of samples and measuring of nuclear fuel cross-sections. The reactor enclosure is constructed of solid steel and is equipped with a reliable cooling system, which operates at temperatures lower than 100⁰C. The encasing also includes temperature and pressure monitors, fail-safe electrical and mechanical systems, as well as earthquake sensing and auto shutdown systems. Additionally, the safety protection system is equipped with several redundant layers of physical and engineering barrier systems, capable of consistently mitigating created radiation fields towards the safety limits of the personnel and the environment.
