Scanning electron microscope 2005 vintage.
PHILIPS / FEI Quanta 400 is a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), capable of producing high-contrast images of a wide variety of samples. The FESEM technique utilizes an electron beam generated from a field emission source to scan the surface of a sample and generate an image. FEI Quanta 400 is designed to produce detailed and high-contrast images with a depth of focus and resolution of up to 0.6 nm. The microscope's design includes a custom deflector coil and electron gun which allows for optimal beam stability over a large sample area. The Field Emission Source (FES) of PHILIPS Quanta 400 also produces an electron beam of ~0.8nm diameter which is directed at the sample and scans in a raster pattern, producing an image. In order to produce a high contrast image, Quanta 400 operates in Variable Pressure Mode (VPM) which allows for reduced surface charging and a better surface resolution of the sample. It also operates in Low Vacuum (LV) mode for optimal performace on samples with rough surfaces. Moreover, PHILIPS / FEI Quanta 400 includes an Image Processing Unit (IPU) which can be used to enhance the image quality and resolution. The image processing features include brightness & contrast control, white level adjustment, gamma adjustment, sharpness/edge enhancement, and noise reduction. FEI Quanta 400 is widely used in the scientific fields, such as material science, semiconductor research, & chemistry research. Its ability to produce high resolution images, at a variety of magnifications, make it a valuable tool for the research process and experimentation procedures. Overall, PHILIPS Quanta 400 is a powerful and reliable scanning electron microscope that can produce high quality images of a multitude of samples. Its variable pressure modes, field emission source, and image processing capabilities make it an ideal choice for a range of scientific and engineering applications.
