AMAT / APPLIED MATERIALS Centura PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) equipment is an ultra-high vacuum chamber designed to perform deposition processes using sputtering and/or evaporation. The system is composed of two distinct chambers, a vacuum deposition chamber for the deposition process and an exhaust chamber which houses the load lock shaft. The vacuum chamber is composed of two main components: the reaction chamber and the source chamber. The reaction chamber is made of stainless steel and is installed with an upper door that will open for loading and unloading. It also features a viewport, pressure gauge, vent port, isolation vacuum valve, and a vacuum pump connection. Inside the reaction chamber is a graphite susceptor plate which rests on top of a heater unit. The source chamber is a smaller chamber that is typically used for evaporation with an attached exhaust port. It also has a pressure gauge, vent port and isolation valve. The unit is powered by a single-phase AC power module and powered by a range of different gases and liquids. The source of material to be deposited is provided by a crucible, which is also connected to the machine. Before deposition begins, the vacuum is elaborated by steps using rough and high vacuum pumps in order to create the desired vacuum condition. After this, the heater is activated and the temperature is monitored with an optic pyrometer for precise control. For deposition to occur, the source and target materials are placed into the appropriate chambers and the gas, liquid, or solid source material is heated until it evaporates. The vaporized material then enters the reaction chamber and condenses onto the target material, depending on the rate of deposition needed. The operated will then monitor the material to ensure that the deposition process is occurring according to the desired parameters. When the desired parameters have been achieved, the tool is then vented and the doors are opened to unload and reload the chamber if needed. The chamber is then reopened to the atmosphere and material can be removed. AMAT Centura PVD asset is an efficient model for physical vapor deposition of various materials with precise and repeatable results. Its ability to control the deposition rate and ensure accurate coating thickness makes it invaluable for those industries where precision in the quality of the coating is needed.
