THERMO ELECTRON / NESLAB MX-500 is a refrigerated recirculating, heat exchanger chiller created by NESLAB Corporation, now known as Thermo Fisher Scientific. It is a closed-cycle, refrigerated equipment featuring a shell and tube, counter flow type heat exchanger. The cooling system relies on R-22 refrigerant and uses a proportional control to adjust cooling output. Its stainless steel shell and copper/cupronickel tubes create a corrosion-resistant interface. The exterior of the unit is powder-coated with a high-gloss finish, and it weighs approximately 375 pounds. The coolant level in the unit is monitored via a float tank and the output temperature is regulated by a TTL Active Low Temperature controller. This controller provides a high degree of accuracy to ± 0.1°C and features over-temperature protection with a digitally selectable temperature range and high/low temperature audible alarms. Its variable speed air-cooled compressor runs at 1/2 or 3/4 horsepower and can operate from -30°C to 20°C, allowing for cooling capacity of 1,150 watts. NESLAB MX-500 includes a digital readout and an RS232 port for remote monitoring. An integrated filter helps keep the refrigerant clean, and the cooling machine also includes a blanking panel to limit condensation. The filter, panels and other components are easy to access and maintain, improving efficiency and aiding in servicing.
