APPLIED BIOSYSTEMS / ABI / MDS SCIEX API 5500 is an advanced mass spectrometer designed by ABI for proteomics and metabolomics research. It is a triple-quadrupole equipment, consisting of an ion source, mass analyzer, and an ion detector. Its ion source utilizes Turbo V electrospray ionization (ESI) with an ion trap nebulizer to provide enhanced sensitivity and resolution. The ion source is capable of performing ESI-TOF-MS/MS. The mass analyzer is composed of three quadrupole elements: the first is used to isolate the precursor ions, the second is used for collision-induced dissociation (CID), and the last is for product ion selection. The collision cell features a heated collision gas which is used for CID to improve the sensitivity. The ion detector features an argon gas detector which provides ultra-high sensitivity for mass spectral analysis. ABI API 5500 also features advanced software, such as Enhanced Productivity Software (EPS), which automates data acquisition, and ProcessorEqualizer (PE) software which allows the user to modify the operation of the system. The unit also includes WorldView data visualization and analysis software, which allows users to identify peptides, peptides-from-the-database, and other related compounds from a variety of sample types. The machine is also equipped with probes and consumables for sample introduction and collection, such as Agilent LC/MS probes, Agilent micro-trap columns, and Agilent micro-vial racks. MDS SCIEX API 5500 is a versatile tool designed to meet the needs of proteomics and metabolomics research. It provides sensitivity and resolution well suited for peptide, protein, and metabolite identification and quantification.
