FEI Expida 1285 is an ion milling equipment designed for the fabrication, preparation and modification of precision specimens. It offers excellent performance for preparing micro- and nano-structures on a variety of materials, including semiconductors, metals, ceramics, glasses, and oxides. Expida 1285 utilizes a long-life filament as its ion source, coupled with a special plasma chamber which enables stable operation and reliable preparation processes. The entire system is housed in a low-noise, dustproof, vibration-free enclosure. The ion milling process is controlled by a sophisticated software, which ensures precise control of the ion source parameters and allows optimizing the process parameters of the specimen according to the exact requirements. It also allows the user to monitor, control, and store the different milling processes in order to minimize time consumption and facilitate future reference. The ion milling process applied to a sample takes place in a vacuum chamber, with the sample placed in a rotateable substrate holder. The ion beam is then directed to the sample surface in order to achieve nanostructures of different shape and size. This beam is focused and moved along X, Y and Z axes depending on the process parameters that the user sets. The unit is fitted with an array of additional equipment for better particle collection and manipulation, including a laser light source and a small vacuum glovebox. The machine can also be used for dual beam processes such as gas/gas, gas/solid, and solid/solid reactions, as well as single beam processes for the preparation of nanofabrication of materials. Thanks to its compact size and versatile features, FEI Expida 1285 is an excellent choice for a range of applications, from nanofabrication and surface cleaning to sample preparation and materials analysis.
