Ion milling system.
GATAN 600 is a specialized ion milling system used to prepare cross sections of samples for microscopic analysis. It is ideal for ultramicrotomy and SEM sample preparation. It utilizes an ion bombardment mechanism to remove material from the surface of the sample in a controlled and efficient manner. The system is fairly modular and is composed of a hot-wall vacuum chamber, an ion source, and sample feed-through components. The hot-wall vacuum chamber provides an ultra-high vacuum environment that allows the electrons, ions, and neutrals generated in the ion source to bombard the sample without significant interference from contaminating gas molecules. The ion source is composed primarily of an electron gun, an electrostatic grid, and a target. The electron gun accelerates electrons to high speeds which cause the neutral gas molecules to become ionized. The electrons, ions, and neutrals produced in the ion source then travel toward the sample via the electrostatic grid and target. The grid is composed of several electrodes which can control the voltage, speed, and direction of the electron beam, allowing for accurate and precise movements of the beam. The target serves as the anode, and the sample is installed on the target. The ion milling process begins once the sample is loaded on the target and appropriate controls have been established. The electron beam is accelerated to a high speed and impinges on the sample surface, removing ions from the surface and producing a cross sectional surface. The sample is continually exposed to the ion bombardment until a predetermined depth is reached, at which point the process ends and the sample is completed. This technique has proven to be extremely effective for cross sectional analysis and characterization of samples. It produces the ideal surface required for SEM work and is often utilized for surface studies of materials and structures. It is an ideal system for those intending to perform SEM/TEM/XRD work and studies.
