GATAN 691 is a high fidelity ion milling equipment that has been designed for ultra-precise material removal and surface modification processes for use in a wide variety of applications, such as making specimens for studies of materials and microstructural analysis. It is a three-axis stage controlled and vacuum compatible system which allows precise placement and placement of the direction of ion impingement with ±0.1° accuracy in all axes. Ion milling can take place in either High Resolution Imaging Mode (HRIM), low voltage or high voltage etching. The unit utilizes a liquid nitrogen cooled carbon filament electron gun to generate the energetic ions which direct a beam of ions toward the substrate. A variable voltage power supply is used to modulate the beam current density for controlled and precise ion milling. The transmissive type vacuum chamber with a six-sided aperture reduces electron bombardment and enhances the beam spot focus. The MillSpec™ controller allows complete control over all power supply, workpiece, and chamber parameters. 691 has incorporatedseveral improved features such as enhanced pointing stability, pinpoint beam focusing on the substrate, faster throughput, and reduced maintenance over its predecessor. It includes an optional Closed-Loadlock Machine (CLS) which enables use of materials in any reactive or inert atmosphere during processing. Further, the tool has an electrostatic and magnetically clean environment for high resolution imaging including variable duty cycle in which the user may rapid fire the ion beam. This asset uses a specially designed low-voltage emitter which can simultaneously mill, etch and coat samples with a diameter of up to 25 mm. This model uses the Transition Exclusion Shield (TES) which can accommodate samples with delicate surfaces with a thickness up to 0.5mm. The equipment is equipped with the patented DINO™ node rotary that enables sample loading and unloading while controlling and monitoring the sample tilt angle. The whole system is enclosed in a compact cabinet and offers built-in safety features with multiple alarms that take care of all the operational parameters during the milling process.
