BIOMERIEUX Vitek® 2 is a clinical laboratory equipment and accessories used for examination and identification of microorganisms that cause infectious disease. It is manufactured by bioMérieux, a French multinational biotechnology company. The Vitek® 2 equipment is a fully automated, high-throughput, expandable platform designed for quick and accurate identification of clinically significant microorganisms while providing informative interpretation on potential antibiotic-resistance patterns of the identified pathogen. BIOMERIEUX Vitek® 2 system includes modules for Gram Negative and Gram Positive identification, yeast identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing and combinations of the three. Each module includes an algorithm that rapidly identifies and classifies patient sample. The unit also includes user-friendly software that records and reports results quickly and accurately. BIOMERIEUX Vitek® 2 machine employs advanced strategies such as image analysis and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology. It also utilizes biochemical techniques such as ß-galactosidase, proteolytic activity, glucose fermentation, and API strips to identify and characterize microorganisms. All modules utilize the API BioFinder® database that contains information on over 600 clinically relevant microorganisms. The Gram Positive and Gram Negative identification modules allow for testing of up to 48 samples simultaneously. Each test takes only 12 to 24 hours and provides reliable results with 95% accuracy or better. The Yeast identification module allows for testing of up to 24 samples in less than 2 hours and provides reliable results of 98% accuracy or better. The Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing module allows for testing of up to 24 samples in less than 2 hours and provides reliable results with 95% accuracy or better. BIOMERIEUX Vitek® 2 tool offers a cost-effective and reliable solution for clinical laboratories. It is simple to use and requires minimal user intervention. This asset is suitable for laboratories of all sizes and provides a reliable mechanism to identify and characterize clinically relevant microorganisms while providing informative interpretation on potential antibiotic resistance patterns of the identified pathogen.
