COBURN Lensmaker is a precision machine tool designed for the rapid production of optics. It was developed in the 1950s by Central Scientific Company, now COBURN Technologies, Inc, and is still in production today. Lensmaker is constructed using a vertical spindle with an X-Y table which is mounted on a bed. The bed is powered by a motor which allows the operator to accurately position the spindle and table over the X, Y, and Z axes. The spindle is usually fitted with a tool changer that allows a wide range of tools to be mounted. COBURN Lensmaker is designed to produce lenses for all kinds of optical systems such as telescopes, microscopes and cameras. It uses a combination of diamond-tipped, abrasive stones, diamond-tipped grinding pitch wheel, and a variety of abrasive disks to cut, grind, shape and polish the lens surface to create a desired optical effect. The machine is capable of grinding and polishing hemispherical, isosceles and cylindrical lenses in all material types, such as glass, plastics, and metals. It can also be used to produce aspheric lenses. Since its first use, Lensmaker has gone through several iterations in order to increase both its precision and speed. COBURN Lensmaker is used in the production of a wide range of optical elements including, lenses, mirrors, prisms, apertures, and polarizing filter components. When used in conjunction with CNC technology it is also capable of producing thin-film components such as thin-film capacitors and thin-film photodetectors. Lensmaker is highly accurate, producing products with repeatability as high as +/- 5 microns over the entire surface. Its component parts are designed for low maintenance, minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity. COBURN Lensmaker is widely used in the electronics, aerospace, biotechnology, forensic, medicine, and imaging industries. Its precision and accuracy makes it an ideal machine tool for producing optical elements.
