KRAMATORSK 1670 is an ancient, manually operated machine tool from Ukraine, consisting of two separate parts - a lathe headstock and a tailstock. It is the second largest machine tool in Ukraine and one of the very few remaining models of its kind. The lathe headstock is composed of a 3-speed cast iron bed, a sliding rest for support of the cutting tool, and a vertical shaft that is adjustable to two positions. At the end of the headstock is the spindle drive which can be adjusted to different speeds from 0.45 to 15 m/min. The tailstock is adjustable by a lead screw and features three-way movement. The basic operation of 1670 is to rotate a piece of metal that is clamped between a lathe chuck and tailstock. The cutting tool is held in the sliding rest and a manual saddle and cross slide carriage which is provided with fine feed screws, enable the cutting tool to be adjusted and moved across the side of the rotating metal. This makes it possible to shape the metal piece being machined. The machine can also be used for thread-cutting, drilling, drilling and reaming, tapered turning, and turning and finishing operations. The spindle head supports different types of chucks for securely clamping the piece to be machined and has speeds adjustable from 0.09 to 360 rpm. The drive mechanical mechanism of KRAMATORSK 1670 is connected with a powerful enough motor with a three-speed switch. The machine is equipped with a threaded spindle, with three-way movement, which is connected to a drive shaft. To cut long cylindrical shapes with accuracy and precision, the machine is provided with a steady rest and a centre plate that fall and rise according to the height of the object and are adjustable in the horizontal plane. 1670 is a heavy and bulky machine, with dimensions of 3.7 m in length, and 1.7 m in width. Despite its large size and age, it is a reliable and efficient machine tool, with its components still remaining in good condition, making it a worthy candidate for restoration. With its large bed size and slide angles, it is suitable to create complex and accurate components with ease.
