OXFORD NanoDep60 is a multipurpose, multi-axis, precision machine tool developed by OXFORD Instruments for cellular and nanoscale device fabrication. The machine combines three main functions - milling, deposition and resistive heating - to allow the creation of fully formed microstructures in a time- and cost-effective manner. OXFORD NANODEP 60 works by extracting material from a given workpiece using a removal process such as milling. This is then followed by a deposition process to add material which creates a new layer of the desired material on the workpiece. The workpiece is then heated to a predetermined temperature with a resistive heating element and cooled to complete the fabrication. NanoDep60 is equipped with four axes that can be controlled independently for precise positioning. These axes are - X, Y, Z and rotational. The X and Y axes are each equipped with a brushless motor that can move the workpiece across a table. The Z axis is also driven by a brushless motor in order to precisely adjust the height of the workpiece. The rotational axis is capable of an angular speed of up to 600rpm and provides precise control for rotating samples. NANODEP 60 is also equipped with an optical viewing equipment, which provides a clear visual of the workpiece. This allows the user to move the workpiece precisely to create the desired microstructures without relying on numerical inputs. In addition to the four axis system, OXFORD NanoDep60 has two control systems. The first is a manual control unit that allows the user to adjust the position of the sample during the fabrication process. The second is an automated control machine, which can record and store settings and positions to enable repeatable tasks. This tool can also be used to programme the machine to fabricate a customised microstructure without user intervention. OXFORD NANODEP 60 has a range of milling tools that can be used to precisely remove material from the workpiece. These tools could include diamond burrs, aspheric grinders, styli, and other abrasive tools. The deposition process is capable of depositing a wide range of materials such as metals, alloys, ceramics and polymers. The deposition asset on NanoDep60 is extremely precise and can be used to accurately deposit materials with thicknesses as small as nanometres. NANODEP 60 is designed for use in a temperature-controlled environment. This is essential as both the deposition and removal processes actively heat up the workpiece. An in-built resistive heating element is also included in the machine, allowing precise temperature control of the workpiece during the fabrication process. Overall, OXFORD NanoDep60 is an advanced machine tool that offers a highly efficient and precise way of fabricating cellular and nanoscale devices. Its wide range of functions and its ability to accurately deposit and remove materials at a nanoscale makes it perfect for a variety of applications.
