MKS Cirrus 2 is a residual gas analyzer (RGA), designed to detect, identify, and analyze ultra-low partial pressures of volatile gases. It uses quadrupole mass spectrometry to produce analytes of up to five quadras of mass separations, analyzing the exact composition and concentrations of gases present. This system uses two quadrupole analyzers. First is an ion source that creates energetic ions to be directed to a mass filter, where specific mass to charge ratios can be isolated, and then detected and amplified at the detector. MKS CIRRUS2 has a wide range of applications such as the study of sub-ppm concentrations of reactive gases, discovering unknown gases and determining their concentrations, and analyzing rare isotopes. It is also capable of analyzing molecular fragmentation. This is especially useful for analyzing mixtures where molecular fragments of the mixture can be identified and quantified. MKS provides two versions of Cirrus 2: one with an Electron Multiplier Detector (EMD) and one with a Faraday Detector (FD). The FD is best used for studying gases at low pressures, while the EMD is better suited for very high pressures. The EMD also has larger insight into the presence of different isotopes. The detection accuracy of CIRRUS2 is 0.2-30 ppm when using the FD, and is able to detect even smaller concentrations when using the EMD. Detection limits for the FD are in the range of 0.8-50 ppb, and for the EMD, 0.2-20 ppb. The analysis range of this analyzer is 1-500 amu, and its linearity range covers 1-260 amu. MKS Cirrus 2 has a variety of features including real-time data acquisition to allow for reliable process monitoring and control; a user-friendly Windows-based data acquisition and analysis software; embedded vacuum pumping; a non-evaporable getter (NEG) in the column for eliminating trace, but troublesome, impurities; and an optional Faraday cup vacuum gauge for improved performance. This analyzer is an ideal choice for users that need to conduct small-scale laboratory studies or large-scale process monitoring. Its size and weight allows it to be integrated in any medium-sized laboratory and is compatible with both commercial and custom-made vacuum systems.
