UNIVERSAL Single Channel (USC) is a residual gas analyzer (RGA) used to measure the partial pressure of residual gasses in a closed system. It is based on a Quadrupole Mass Filter (QMF) design and is manufactured by the company Residual Gas Analysers USA. USC utilizes the principles of quadrupole ion filtration to separate and detect components of a gas sample. It works by applying an electrical field to the four electrodes of the QMF, resulting in a vibration of the ions within the vacuum chamber. When the vibration frequency matches that of the ions, they resonate between the electrodes. This resonance is known as the "mass-selective instability" or instability resolution frequency. The ions that match the frequency of the applied electric field pass through the electrodes and can be identified by measuring the current measured at the output of the QMF. USC has a mass detection range of 0-100 amu. It is capable of measuring low partial pressures of gases, as low as 10-9 mbar. It also provides a resolution of 0.1 amu and is able to detect both positive and negative ions. In addition, its mass range can be tuned to increase its sensitivity. USC is also equipped with a discrimination filter, which allows the user to set mass cut-off levels that vary over the range of the scan. This filter improves the measurement accuracy and reduces the amount of detected background noise. USC is a reliable, easy-to-use system and is suitable for a wide range of applications such as leak detection, process control and elemental analysis. Furthermore, its compact design makes it suitable for installation in confined spaces. USC has the added advantage of having low maintenance requirements and is relatively easy to operate.
