APPLIED BIOSYSTEMS / ABI / MDS SCIEX API 3200 MD is a double-focusing magnetic linear ion trap mass spectrometer capable of rapid, precise and accurate analysis of large molecules over a m/z range of 40-2100 Da. It has a mass resolving power (m/z) of greater than 10,000, a scan range (mass range) up to 200 Da and a mass resolving power greater than 500 FWHM (Full Width at Half Maximum). The instrument is based on a double focusing multiple magnetic set-up, in which a permanent magnet is used to trap and focus ions in a linear ion trap (LIT), while an electromagnetic field is used to transport and deflect the ions in order to precisely measure their mass. The advantage of this configuration is that sample is able to be trapped and scanned in short time periods and the duty cycle is increased for faster sample acquisition. This technology also provides for rapid and highly sensitive detection of large molecules over a wide range of masses and charge states. For both positive and negative ionization modes, ABI API 3200 MD utilizes an electrospray ion source. The instrument has an integrated ion source and the spray needle is routinely replaced for the highest performance results. The electrospray ionization is optimized to reduce energy spreading and promotes ions with a narrow charge distribution allowing for accurate and repeatable results. MDS SCIEX API 3200 MD has a data acquisition mode based on a Fast Scanning/Mass Range approach, and is designed to measure up to 2000 data points per second, providing a fast scan speed and increased resolution and sensitivity when compared to traditional single focusing mass spectrometers. The scan speed is adjustable and it is possible to acquire a full range spectrum in seconds. In addition, the mass spectrometer has the capability to detect low levels of impurities and can be used to analyze multiple components in a single sample. The instrument is designed to be simple to use, easy to maintain, and is capable of working in almost any environment. It is a versatile system that can be used for applications such as drug discovery, metabolomics and proteomics.
