APPLIED BIOSYSTEMS / ABI / MDS SCIEX API 5000 is a high performance analyzer equipped with Orbitrap-hybrid quadrupole-linear ion trap mass spectrometry (QTRAP) technology. This powerful spectrometer is capable of providing fast, high-resolution and accurate mass measurements of small molecules and peptides up to 20,000 u/mol. It uses a hybrid quadrupole-linear ion trap to provide both LC/MS and MS/MS capabilities. The first component of this spectrometer is the Orbitrap analyzer, which acts as a mass analyzer allowing for high-resolution mass measurement at high scan rates while ensuring accurate identification of small molecules and peptides. Spanning up to a mass range of 20,000u/mol, the Orbitrap Analyzer operates on the principles of Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometry (FTMS). This technology utilizes the trapping and fragmentation of ions formed in the ionization process by the tandem quadrupole Linear Ion Trap (LIT). The second component is the quadrupole-linear ion trap (QTRAP). This component combines the capabilities of the quadrupole and LIT to allow interface flexibility, providing both LC/MS (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry) and MS/MS (MS-MS) capabilities. During LC/MS runs, the quadrupole filter directs ions towards the ion trap, and due to selective preferential fragmentation processes the spectrometer can divide between the dissimilar molecule masses and therefore distinguish even between two isobaric compounds. Whereas, during MS/MS runs, the QTRAP can determine in-source fragmentation and selective reaction monitoring (SRM) allowing for specific compounds to be targeted and then selected and identified by the software. ABI API 5000 is a high-end spectrometer with a powerful set of capabilities that enable high-resolution mass measurements at high scan rates. With its hybrid quadrupole-linear ion trap technology, the spectrometer is able to distinguish even between two isobaric compounds, making it ideal for any research projects requiring accurate and fast results in a variety of spectrometry applications.
