CAMECA IMS 7F is a multicollector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) instrument designed for isotope analysis of geological and environmental samples. It is widely used in geological, hydrological, climatological and archaeological research. IMS 7F consists of four main components; a magnet, a plasma source, an ion detector and a data system. CAMECA IMS 7F magnet is composed of an electromagnet that generates an external magnetic field and a triple mass filter. Together they create a curved, elongated magnetic field that functions to deflect the ions of different mass-to-charge ratios emitted from the plasma source and manipulate their trajectories. The plasma source is an argon-filled chamber that is heated to temperatures between 6,000 and 10,000 kelvin. This allows the argon gas to break down and form a plasma containing metallic ions of elements being analyzed, which are then emitted. The ion detector is composed of a Faraday stir plate, eight ion collectors arranged in a circular arrangement, and buffer gases to clean eventual background contamination. This arrangement enables multiple ions to be collected at once and their isotopic compositions determined simultaneously. The data system is composed of an analog board, an acquisition unit and a computer. It contains electronics for data acquisition and signal processing, an oscilloscope module for waveform storing and a software for data analysis of the elements and isotopes being studied. IMS 7F is a robust multicollector ICP-MS platform that is able to measure isotope ratios in a variety of elements with high precision. Its ultra-sensitive performance in combination with its unique capabilities makes it an incredibly useful tool for earth science.
