PHYSICAL ELECTRONICS / PHI ESCA is a type of spectrometer used for surface analysis. It uses X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to measure elemental composition, electronic state, and chemical state of surfaces. XPS involves using X-rays to excite electrons from the surface molecules, which then release electrons of different energies. This allows up to a 10 atomic monolayer depth of the surface to be measured. PHI ESCA spectrometer is an ultra-high resolution spectrometer designed for depth profiling. It uses a filament to generate a focused X-ray beam which is then focused onto the surface to be analyzed. A monochromator is used to accelerate the X-rays to a uniform energy level and a focus mirror directs the beam to the surface. PHYSICAL ELECTRONICS ESCA spectrometer is equipped with a hemispherical electrostatic analyzer which directs the emitted photoelectrons into an electron detector. The photoelectron detector measures the energy of the electrons which is then translated into a binding energy. This information can then be used to determine the composition of the sample surface. The advantages of using ESCA spectrometer are its high sensitivity, high resolution, and small sample size requirements. It also has a greater depth profiling capability than other spectrometers, allowing up to 10 monolayers of the sample to be analyzed. This type of instrument is essential for surface analysis of materials such as semiconductors, proteins, and catalysts, allowing for a thorough assessment of their composition and properties.
