SHIMADZU EPMA-1610 is an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer designed for elemental analysis. It uses a combination of X-ray beam sources, detection system, and software to produce results with improved accuracy and repeatability. The X-ray beam sources in EPMA-1610 are a pair of an X-ray tube and a laser. The X-ray tube is a 30 kV rhodium anode, and the laser is a neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG). The Nd:YAG laser produces a monochromatic X-ray beam with a very narrow wavelength range. The combination of these two sources results in improved energy resolution, which allows for more selective measurements. SHIMADZU EPMA-1610 has a cooled silicon drift detector (SDD), which increases the signal-to-noise ratio and improves the detection accuracy. The SDD is coupled to a digital signal processor (DSP) and an acquisition system to construct the spectral data. Data is acquired in high resolution with a pixel resolution of 2.5 eV. A wide range of sample sizes can be analyzed with EPMA-1610. Samples can be as small as a few microns, and the analysis spot size can range from 100 μm to 4 mm. SHIMADZU EPMA-1610's software allows for traceable data analysis. Data can be used for qualitative and quantitative measurements, and the software also allows for reporting of results according to ISO and ASTM standards. EPMA-1610 can be used for multiple applications, such as determining composition of thin film layers, location of contaminant particles, evaluation of surface oxidation and contamination, and measuring stress in samples. It is a powerful analyser suited for industrial laboratories.
