THERMO SCIENTIFIC LTQ (Linear Trap Quadropole) is an advanced, ultrasensitive spectrometer that combines the speed and specificity of tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) with a wide dynamic range of mass accuracies. It functions through the combination of quadrupole filters, linear ion traps, and ionization sources. The quadrupole filters allow for exact selection of specific ions, and the linear ion traps can be used to rapidly scan ions of interest to obtain the MS/MS signal. The collinear ion-focusing ionization source has the capability to produce larger ion beams of up to about 100,000 ions per second. The improved beam size and shorter drop times increase the signal to noise ratio of the ions, allowing for improved detection limits. LTQ has an impressive array of in-situ capabilities, ranging from standard atmospheric pressure ionization (APCI) to electrospray ionization (ESI), and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI). Additionally, these capabilities can be optimized by changing the drift gas in the ionization region and/or by varying the RF voltage. The vaper and vacuum system on the sub-cell stage, in conjunction with the adjustable gas-flow valves, allows for optimization of the instrument's resolution for molecules of all sizes. Furthermore, the high voltage power supply ensures precise selection of the ion-optics quadrupole, RF voltage, sampling cone voltage, and lens voltage for improved selectivity of the desired analytes. The instrument features thermopolymer-coated quadrupole rods to enable high-resolution measurements and a quadrupole mass filter with a mass range of 50-1000 DA/As with a resolution of 0.7-30,000 depending upon the spectrometer configuration. Furthermore, the collision cell operates at pressures of up to 4 mTorr to further enhance the resolution of the MS/MS data. Overall, the primary benefits of THERMO SCIENTIFIC LTQ spectrometer are its accuracy, sensitivity, and wide range of capabilities, making it a powerful tool for a variety of analytical applications, such as analysis of biopolymers, drugs, and small molecules.
