VARIAN 820-MS is a spectrometer in the family of atomic spectroscopy instruments, used to explore the atomic and molecular structure of various materials. It is a combination of both Mass Selective Detector (MSD) and Magnitude Squared Detector (MSD), allowing for the accurate examination of both the mass and magnitude of individual elements and compounds. The instrument is based on ionization chamber technology, where a small sample of the material is placed inside the chamber and a charged particle is then generated. This charged particle creates a relatively high energy region that can separate charged particles based on mass that pass through the chamber. By monitoring the energy levels of this region, and measuring the relative masses of the particles, the instrument is capable of detecting and analyzing the composition of the material. Orbital Path Technology (OPT) is used to operate the instrument optimally. It uses a quadrupole mass filter to allow higher mass ions to pass while simultaneously blocking other ions, allowing the instrument to accurately measure the mass of the sample. It is also used to isolate elements of a sample that may be complex or difficult to detect with traditional spectroscopy methods. Once the sample has been analyzed, the instrument generates a mass spectrum. This is a graph used to visually display the relative intensity of mass versus each element in the sample. The purpose of the spectrum is to identify and quantify materials within the sample.
