WATERS 2487 is a double-focusing and magnetic sector field inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). It is designed for the ultra-trace analysis of a variety of elemental species. 2487 model has two high-resolution analyzers - a conventional quadrupole mass analyzer (QMS) and an electrostatic sector field energy analyzer (ESFEA). This combination of two different mass spectrometers make WATERS 2487 one of the most sensitive ICP-MS instruments available. 2487 has an automated pneumatic tube system (PTS) which samples the ions from the plasma source and directs them to the first quadrupole, the QMS. The QMS contains a series of four parallel rods spaced equidistant from each other and aligned in a square configuration. The voltage applied to each rod is adjustable, allowing the QMS to accurately filter ions with a particular mass-to-charge ratio (m/z). The ions then pass through skimmer cones and are collimated into a narrow beam with the second cone, improving the mass resolution and signal-to-noise ratio of the QMS. The ions pass through the QMS into the ESFEA, where they are separated based on their energy. Within the ESFEA, the ions emerge from a short drift tube and spread out within a large, cylindrical analyzer chamber. The chamber has an altitude-azimuth insulator attached to it, which has two internal-facing electrostatic electrodes. The ions are accelerated onto the electrodes, where their m/z is determined by their energy. Higher energy ions travel farther than lower energy ions, and are detected on different parts of the detector plate. WATERS 2487 is designed for ultra-trace elemental analysis, with a detection limit of 5 picograms/mL for several elements, such as Ag, Au, and Th. It offers exceptional sensitivity, rugged design, and reliable performance. 2487 also has optional features to help ensure accurate data collection, such as a closed-loop nebulizer system, a short residence time in the sample introduction system, and direct infusion of solutions instead of sample introduction with a nebulizer. These features improve the precision and accuracy of the results, making WATERS 2487 a powerful and reliable analytical tool.
