WATERS LC/MS/MS is a state-of-the-art spectrometer for the detection of molecules and particles using liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry and tandem mass spectrometry. This highly sensitive spectrometer is used in a number of applications, including the analysis of pharmaceutical products and environmental contaminants, as well as the investigation of complex biological samples. The LC/MS/MS equipment utilizes a liquid chromatography (LC) system to separate components, followed by mass spectrometry (MS) to determine molecular structures and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) to identify components and differentiate between them. Starting with the chromatographic separation step, MICROMASS LC/MS/MS unit employs high performance liquid chromatography, or HPLC, to separate and analyze components of a complex sample. The machine typically incorporates a binary solvent delivery tool comprised of a mobile and a stationary phase, which are connected to the injector asset and separation column. The mobile and stationary phase solvent systems are used to propel sample components by pressure-based liquid transport. Peak separation is achieved by maintaining precise control over the flow rate, temperature, and relative strength of the stationary and mobile phase solvents. Following the chromatographic separation, the MS/MS model detects individual molecules and particles by exposing them to a magnetic field or an electrical field, depending on the type of mass spectrometer employed. This excites the molecules and causes them to lose electrons, and form ions which can then be measured and quantified. For the unique analysis provided by WATERS / MICROMASS LC/MS/MS equipment, tandem mass spectrometry is employed. This technique provides more accurate and sensitive results by combining the basic principles of the two main types of mass spectrometers: the single quadrupole MS and the triple quadrupole MS. In the single quadrupole MS method, one quadrupole is used to select the ionized molecules of interest and isolate them from the sample. The second quadrupole performs a fragmentation process, where the molecules are broken apart, producing a series of fragment ions. The tandem MS/MS method combines both quadrupoles, using the first quadrupole to select and detect molecules and the second quadrupole to further analyze the ions and quantify them with minimal carryover from the first step. WATERS LC/MS/MS system provides and remarkably sensitive and extremely accurate means of separating and identifying complex molecules and particles. Employing a combination of advanced liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and tandem mass spectrometry techniques, the unit offers unparalleled performance for a wide variety of applications.
