WATERS / MICROMASS MALDI micro MX is a high-resolution matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) system designed for the analysis of large molecules and various classes of biological molecules, such as proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids. It combines the advantages of improved resolution and sensitivity with unique hardware advances aimed at increasing the speed and accuracy of analysis. The first stage of data acquisition is the introduction of a sample into the MALDI ionization source. A target plate is coated with a matrix material, such as a-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid (CHCA) and then a sample is applied to the plate. The sample breaks into an array of sample spots which are ionized by the MALDI source during the MALDI process. WATERS MALDI micro MX is then optimized to collect the data from the process. It features a unique precision jet stream ionization source that provides a high-pressure, expandable stream of ionization to selectively ionize the samples. The Precision Jet Stream increases the ionization efficiency and allows for efficient mass-analysis. Once the sample is ionized, it is transported to a time-of-flight (TOF) mass analyzer. At a given accelerated voltage, the TOF mass analyzer separates the ionized samples according to their individual masses. This feature eliminates the need for lengthy multi-stage experiments and allows for faster and more efficient data acquisition. Finally, WATERS / MICROMASS MALDI micro MX includes an atomization chemistry cell which enables the generation of hybrid mass spectra from both MALDI-ionized and electrospray-ionized samples.
