WATERS / MICROMASS MALDI is an ultra-high resolution mass spectrometer, designed to provide quantitative and qualitative capability to analyze small to large molecules. The source of the spectrometer is WATERS MALDI (matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization) technology, which allows the detection and analysis of both intact and fragmented molecules and is applicable to a wide range of applications. The instrument can measure the mass-to-charge ratio of ions in an energy deflection region, which is composed of a series of electrostatic lenses that cause particle acceleration or deceleration depending on their respective m/z (mass-to-charge ratio) values. The process takes place in a highly controlled environment, involving an ion source, inlet optics (with sampling and accumulation stages), a detector array (which includes time-of-flight, quadrupole, orthogonal acceleration time-of-flight, and other detector components) and data collection systems. MICROMASS MALDI is suited to many different types of analysis, from non-targeted analysis of complex samples, to targeted identification and quantification of proteins/petides, lipids, polymers, and small molecules. This powerful spectrometer can identify and quantitate large biomolecules up to 100,000 daltons in size, with good precision and accuracy. The device also offers exceptional versatility, as it can easily switch between different experimental modes within seconds, providing the user with a range of different analytical capabilities. It produces broad peaks, as well as high signal-to-noise ratio spectra, with excellent resolution between sample ions in both positive and negative ionization modes. The excellent robustness of the system means that it is well-suited to daily, routine laboratory use. With a weight of approximately 500Kg, MALDI is also a highly integrated device which is easy to set up and maintain. It has a high level of automation and minimal user interface. This means that the user experience is optimized, with its efficient operation enabling the quick and reliable identification of unknown compounds in the sample.
