Mass spectrometer.
WATERS / MICROMASS Quatro is a high-performance triple quadrupole mass spectrometer designed for improving the accuracy and precision of quantitative and qualitative analyses. The system consists of two ionization sources, a multi-quadrupole analyzer powered by a high-speed digital signal processor, and an electrostatic deflector. The first chamber of WATERS Quatro, the ionization source, houses both electron impact ionization (EI) and chemical ionization (CI) systems to provide the best combination for locating and analyzing compounds in mixtures. The EI source employs a heating filament to produce energetic electrons that ionize molecules in the gas phase. The CI source, on the other hand, is used to ionize nonvolatile compounds using a reagent gas to form more stable, multiply-charged analyte ions. The next chamber of the system consists of the Quadrupole Mass Filter, which is a combination of transimpedance amplifiers and other digital signal processing components that isolate the desired ion and detect its mass-to-charge ratio. The quadrupole rods inside the device act as filters for the ions, allowing only those of a certain m/z ratio to pass through the entrance of the quadrupole and into the third chamber. The third chamber consists of a V-shaped deflector that uses electric fields to select an ion of a particular m/z according to its size and velocity. This capability allows the device to determine the concentration of an analyte ion from the total sample. Finally, the fourth chamber of MICROMASS Quatro contains an ion detector which collects data and sends it to a computer for further analysis. The data can be used to create images of mass spectra and monitor the concentrations of analyte ions over time. Quatro is a high-performance system with its various components and features working together to quickly identify specific compounds in a mixture for accurate results. The device is ideal for the quantitative and qualitative analysis in laboratories, universities, and medical centers.
