WATERS / MICROMASS XEVO TQ-MS is a high performance tandem quadrupole mass spectrometer (MS/MS) designed to provide precise and accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis of molecules and molecular fragments by measuring the mass-to-charge ratio of charged particles. The instrument uses a combination of two sequential quadrupole rods in the ion source, sample introduction and vacuum interface to identify and analyze compounds of interest. The first quadrupole, referred to as the "analyzer", filters the ions by their mass-to-charge ratio to determine which ions to send to the second or "reflector" quadrupole. The reflector filters the ion transmission from the first quadrupole and is used to permit the researcher to analyze different areas of a single mass spectrum or a variety of mass spectra from a single sample. WATERS XEVO TQ-MS is a unique instrument as it utilizes a unique combination of collision-induced dissociation (CID) and multiple-stage tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). This approach enables the MS/MS to serve as a "post-scan filter" for hundreds of molecules in a single sample. This process enables one to quickly identify and quantify selected compounds in complex mixtures. The instrument's sensitivity and robustness permit capture and analysis of transient ions and small molecules, such as nucleotides, glycans, lipids and fatty acids. Resolutions of m/z ranges up to 35,000 are achievable, allowing for excellent peak shapes and broad linearity of response. The detection system is equipped with a unique Jet Stream Technology interface, which helps minimize the performance variability of the spectrometer due to changes in pressure and temperature. Furthermore, the Jet Stream Technology enables the user to operate the instrument with a limited web of solvents. Additionally, a low-reaching mass range (down to 3amu) also enhances performance at pressures to less than one micron, allowing for operation of the instrument at pressures much lower than those usually employed in LC/MS. MICROMASS XEVO TQ-MS has been successfully employed in a wide variety of industries for the detection and quantitative analysis of a variety of compounds, including metabolites, lipids, drug molecules and peptides in various biological settings. Furthermore, the instrument is also employed in trace analysis of metals, as well as food analysis in clinical and forensic laboratory settings. Additionally, the instrument has proven its worth in basic research fields as it is capable of providing highly-detailed structural information of compounds and is commonly used in proteomics and metabolomics studies.
