WATERS / MICROMASS XEVO TQ-MS is an analytical spectrometer designed for the detection and analysis of trace molecules in a variety of samples. It is a hybrid triple quadrupole (TQ) tandem mass spectrometer (MS) with built-in Time-of-Flight (ToF) capabilities, allowing it to detect and quantify low level compounds as well as provide structural information. The device operates on the principles of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to separate compounds of interest from various sample types and then detect them through fragmentation and measurement of their mass-to-charge (m/z) ratio. A triple quadrupole mass spectrometer is made of three distinct quadrupoles (Q1, Q2 and Q3), each of which having a set of four parallel rods that provide an electric field. When a sample molecules pass through Q1, it is filtered and ionized by a process called ionization that strips away electrons from its atoms, leaving it an ion that carries a single positive or negative charge. As it proceeds through the other two quadrupoles, this ion is steered through the machine using the electric field. In Q2, the ion is further filtered and identified by the its m/z ratio. Q3 then further breaks down the original ion into fragment ions and those fragment ions are measured for their m/z ratios, allowing for structure determination. The Xevo device is outfitted with a high-speed vacuum pump and turbomolecular pump as well as a variety of different ionization sources such as an electron ionization (EI) source and an atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization (APCI) source. Furthermore, the device can be configured with additional sources such as photoionization (PI), thermospray (TSP) and electrospray (ESI) to increase the range of sample types that can be analyzed. In addition to its triple quadrupole configuration, the Xevo also includes a high-efficiency ToF analyzer that allows users to identify and accurately quantify light and non-volatile compounds as part of a GC-MS experiment and it offers a variety of additional features such as auto-tuning and calibration, data system and data analysis software. Overall, WATERS XEVO TQ-MS is a versatile and powerful analytical spectrometer designed for the analysis of a wide range of samples. Its high-speed vacuum and turbomolecular pump, multiple ionization sources and ToF analyzer provide an unparalleled level of performance and accuracy in analyzing trace molecules and help ensure that all the information required for a sample can be obtained quickly and effectively.
