This optical spectrophotometer features a wide dynamic range of signal measurement, and a broad range of wavelength selection. The spectrophotometer utilizes a light source, a wavelength dispersion element, an integration sphere, and a detector for the accurate measurement of light intensity at various wavelengths. The detector array consists of four photodiodes which are sensitive to different wavelength regions. This arrangement allows for rapid data acquisition and processing. The detector array is connected to the PC-based optical interface which contains a control panel. This panel is used to setup the spectrum measurement parameters, such as the integration time, the reference arm intensity, and the center wavelength. The dispersive element used in the spectrophotometer is an interference filter, or monochromator. This device acts as an optical filter by allowing the transmission of a narrow rage of light wavelengths. This is typically used to select a particular wavelength for measurement or to measure a range of wavelengths simultaneously. The integration sphere is used to collect and uniformly distribute light from the source before it is detected by the photodiodes. This ensures the accuracy of the measurement as the intensity of the light is equalized across the sample. HP 5890 Series II is suitable for various applications, such as the measurement of peak wavelength, full-width half-maximum, absorbance, and peak intensity of organic and inorganic samples.
