AMAT / APPLIED MATERIALS CENTURA is a type of reactor designed to deposit thin layers of material on a substrate (surface), such as in creating solar cells. It is a physical vapor deposition (PVD) reactor specifically designed for large scale production of photovoltaic cells. AMAT CENTURA is composed of several components which work together to deliver a controlled flow of materials onto the substrate. The main chamber consists of a quartz tube with an inner diameter of several feet, sealed at the top and bottom. This inner chamber is heated to high temperatures, typically around 950C. Attached to the main chamber are two additional side chambers which are heated separately to different temperatures. Inside the main chamber are several gas inlets and outlets which are used to deposit materials. The gas inlets typically deliver gases such as hydrogen, hydrogen fluoride, and oxygen, and the outlets are used to exhaust the waste gases which are created once the material is deposited. The substrate to be coated is attached to an arm, which is then moved into the chamber and placed in the desired position by a robotic motion control system. Once the material is ready to be deposited, a target material, such as a silicon wafer, is placed on the substrate. Once the target material is in the correct position, it is then heated by the two side chambers, and the gas inlets begin to supply the gas mixtures for the deposition. The gas mixtures are manipulated using a feedback system that ensures that the desired qualities are present in the deposition. The reactor also has a number of other processes which can be used to control the deposition, such as the use of a rotating target to create a uniform coating. Once the deposition is complete, the arm is withdrawn from the chamber, and the substrate can then be safely removed and the layer of material on it inspected.
