AMAT/AMAT / APPLIED MATERIALS Producer is a thorium-uranium fuel cycle reactor with an output of 150 MW th. This reactor is specifically designed for generating process heat for industrial applications. The reactor contains a tightly coupled, small, powerful and perfectly stable core design which is capable of providing a safe and reliable heat source. AMAT Producer utilizes a core made of graphite block with thorium-uranium fuel assemblies in a radial arrangement. The fuel assemblies are loaded with thorium and uranium metal, as well as ceramic compacted fuel rods with a closed-end fuel pin. The fuel factors of the core have been designed to have a wide range of power regeneration in order to allow the optimal power production of the reactor. The core is also designed to be extremely short-lived in order to reduce the need for fuel reloads. APPLIED MATERIALS Producers' thermal-hydraulics equipment is unique, using a natural circulation vertical flow of water in the core to optimize heat transfer and to minimize thermal stratification of the core. The water flows from a hot plenum located at the top of the core and flows into a common intermediate heat exchanger and then flows through the core channels and returns back to the plenum. The entire system has proven extremely reliable and efficient, with operating temperatures up to 700°C and temperature stability within ±1°C. The reactor unit also includes a fully integrated, passive safety machine that utilizes the concept of passive cooling to reduce the risk of a loss of coolant accident. This tool works in conjunction with the natural circulation of the water coolant to quickly and safely shutdown the reactor if required. Additionally, a full emergency core cooling asset is available to provide additional backup protection. Lastly, APPLIED MATERIALS Producer is designed with a modular, compact and spatially efficient layout, which enables its fuel elements to be pre-loaded and installed quickly and with minimal disruption. This makes the model easily upgradable and ensures a high degree of safety and reliability for its users.
