BMR HIDEP (Highly Ingessed Deuterium-Tritium Plasma Reactor), is a novel type of fusion reactor developed specifically for achieving large fusion power densities. Its core features are the implementation of a non-thermal plasma field and a field line approach to magnetic confinement. Non-thermal plasma refers to a plasma in which the electrons are energized to energies significantly above thermal equilibrium. In HIDEP, this process is accomplished through the use of an electron cyclotron resonance, which is a radio-frequency cavity that accelerates the electrons in the plasma. The non-thermal electron energy gives the plasma higher-energy distributions, allowing it to sustain a higher density. This in turn allows for higher power densities and faster fusion reactions. The magnetic confinement of the plasma in BMR HIDEP is achieved through a field line approach, wherein a large torus (doughnut-shaped) structure is surrounded by powerful electromagnets. This causes the particles in the plasma to travel along the same field lines and prevents them from diffusing too far away from the reactor. This technique of magnetic confinement, combined with the non-thermal plasma, allows for extremely efficient confinement. Aside from the high power density, the other advantage of HIDEP lies in its ability to produce neutrons, which can be used in a variety of applications such as neutron radiography or applied in nuclear fuel cycles. Additionally, due to the high temperature and pressure of the fusion reaction, BMR HIDEP can be used as a form of thermal energy production, similar to a conventional power plant. Ultimately, HIDEP is a promising candidate for the next generation of fusion reactors. It has the potential to provide a high power density with safe and efficient confinement of the plasma, and can be used to generate both electrical power and neutrons.
