GEMINI Gemini II is a pool-type multi-megawatt nuclear power plant with high thermal efficiency, designed for both electricity and heat generation. Its design is based on a KAERI-developed small and medium-sized pressurized water reactor (PWR). It offers a combination of excellent operating flexibility, high performance, and safety. With an innovative design, Gemini II helps to reduce costs for new energy generation and enables the reuse of old nuclear power plants while maintaining reliability and safety. The reactor is built using a modular equipment with mass production and advanced digital instrumentation and controls to ensure reliable operation. GEMINI Gemini II consists of a primary system containing a pressurized water reactor (PWR) core and a secondary unit containing a steam turbine and a condensate pump. The PWR core is comprised of fuel assemblies consisting of fuel rods, control rods, and other necessary components. The pressurizer, assembly, and primary heat exchanger form a closed loop of pressurized water connecting the PWR core and the steam turbine. The steam generator utilizes the same closed loop to transform thermal energy into pressure energy and to supply superheated steam to the steam turbine in the secondary machine. To ensure the highest safety and operational performance, Gemini II has incorporated advanced control systems and instrumentation. The neutron flux in the core, the temperature, and the pressure are monitored continuously and digitally. With its built-in safety systems and digital instrumentation, the reactor design has employed multiple safety functions such as the emergency core temperature control (ECTC), safety injection tool, and pressurizer relief valves for safe operations. In addition, GEMINI Gemini II features a range of additional safety features and advanced technologies for reliable operation. The reactor utilizes a redundant and diverse set of safety-related functions, including a full range of passive safety features such as shutdown systems, meltdown prevention, and decay heat removal functions. It also employs non-reactivity methods such as fuel range monitoring to ensure the safe operation of the reactor. In addition, water chemistry control, criticality control, and neutron flux distribution control are used to maintain the optimum operation of the reactor. Gemini II is capable of operating at up to 860 MWt and producing around 700 MWe. Its state-of-the-art design provides excellent economic performance, superior safety features, and high efficiency. Furthermore, its design enables an additional 10-20% efficiency with fuel cycle management over the traditional light-water reactor cycle. This reactor ensures a stable, green, and reliable energy output that supports the modern energy needs.
