GEMINI I is a highly advanced research reactor developed by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to bridge the gap between technology and education. It is an ultra-compact, versatile and easily operated research reactor specifically designed to provide advanced training and support a range of educational research projects related to nuclear energy. I is a 10 MWth reactor, meaning it produces 10 MW of thermal energy. It has a high neutron flux and short neutron life times, meaning it can quickly perform experiments and reach conclusions before the radiation field changes. GEMINI I's main core is made up of a Moderator and Reflector tank, Control Rod Cartridge Assembly and Beryllium Reflector. The Moderator tank contains a highly purified heavy water, also known as deuterium oxide and acts as a 'slowdowner' for the neutrons. The Reflector tank houses Uranium-Cadmium enriched fuel pellets to further increase the neutron flux. These fuel pellets contain a substantial amount of polonium-210 and beryllium, which are there to act as a reflector and strengthen the nuclear reaction. The Control Rod Cartridge Assembly is where the uranium fuel pellets are inserted into and contains the cooling mechanism for the reactor, as well as the Control Rods which are inserted and removed to adjust the power output of the reactor. I is also more fuel efficient than most reactors as it uses a recurring circuit maintenance system. This system removes the need for refueling, allowing the reactor to run for extended periods of time with the same fuel load. Lastly, GEMINI I reactor comes with safety features that are highly reliable and completely safe for use. There are multiple safeguards built into the system that keep the reactor from becoming unstable and prevent any major incident.
