GEMINI III is the name of a nuclear reactor that was designed by the Westinghouse company in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The reactor is a prototype fast breeder reactor, meaning it can generate more nuclear fuel than it consumes. It is a liquid-metal-cooled reactor, meaning it uses a liquid metal such as sodium or lithium as a coolant. The use of a liquid metal allows the reactor to operate at higher temperatures than a conventional reactor. GEMINI I / II is a fueled for, which means it uses fuel rods made of uranium and plutonium. The reactor has a thermocouple tubular core made of a stainless steel vessel with several sections. The heat generated from this core is exchanged with the liquid metal coolant in the lower reservoir where it is transferred to a steam generator for producing the electricity. The core of III is also surrounded by a graphite moderator, which affects the rate of the neutrons produced by the fission process and acts as a thermal capacitor that stores the heat. I / II reactor itself is a compact, single-pass, rectangular core with the fuel array arranged in a honeycomb pattern. This design allows for easier maintenance and monitoring of the core temperatures. The core is cooled by a liquid metal coolant that flows through pipes around the core, dissipating the heat generated by the fuel to the steel containment vessel. The design of GEMINI III is based on the safety and economics of fast breeder reactors. These reactors require a large amount of uranium fuel to be loaded into the core in order to generate the necessary energy, but the use of liquid metal coolant allows the reactor to operate at a higher temperature, resulting in increased efficiency, less fuel needed and, as a result, a cost savings for the operator. GEMINI I / II is considered a prototype reactor, as its design and operation will serve as a model for future designs of fast breeder reactors. The reactor has undergone extensive testing and has been found to be a safe and viable model for generation of nuclear power.
