GEMINI III is a small-scale pool-type research reactor developed by the Nuclear Energy Institute. It is a highly innovative research reactor that offers a variety of functions, all while being coated in a pool of irradiated water. GEMINI I / II's core is composed of uranium-dioxide fuel, which is highly enriched to 93% uranium-235, and resides in an irradiated aluminum tank with an integral vapor-cooling system. Graphite reflectors and aluminum control rods are also employed to control the reactor's power output. Further, a pooled-water boron solution serves to absorb excess neutrons and ensure safety at all times. The primary purpose for this reactor is neutron scattering and research into advanced materials. Through its irradiation capabilities, it is possible to simulates years of material aging in just a few days. This experimentation can further reveal environmental mitigation strategies, the performance of nuclear fuels, and the efficiency of nuclear processes. In addition to neutronics studies and neutron scattering, III reactor is also capable of conducting advanced waste transmutation and radioisotope production. An automated doping process can be used to produce desired medical, veterinary, and industrial isotopes, which are often used in cancer treatment and diagnostic imaging. Specialized equipment, such as a gas-filled ionization chamber, allows for further neutronic studies or the neutron diffusion-length measurements that provide a means of estimating maximum fuel burnup. I / II is designed to operate perpetually under 50 kW-th with a peak power level of up to 100 kW-th, both of which are provided by a set of 500kHz electric supply system. For energy output, it can generate an electrical current of up to 90 kW and can use this to facilitate, among other things, neutron imaging or imaging with particles accelerated from the reactor. Safety is a key feature of GEMINI III. It features an array of sensors and circuits that constantly monitor the reactor's status. The main purpose of these is to detect any kind of anomaly or power surge that could potentially lead to overheating. In such a case, automatic control rods inserted into the core from its four corners will serve to lower the power to an acceptable level. Fully automated safety and shutdown systems exist as well, with the ability to activate safety protocols and bring the reactor to a halt in the event of a problem. In conclusion, GEMINI I / II's small-scale research reactor offers a great range of features, all the while optimizing safety. Its ability to conduct neutron scattering experiments and radiation studies, combined with its advanced waste transmutation and radioisotope production capabilities, make it a valuable tool in research and development organizations worldwide.
