GENRAD / QUADTECH 1693 reactor (also known as a nuclear research facility) is an instrument designed to provide a secure, dedicated and reliable nuclear irradiation source. With its high precision temperature and pressure control, GENRAD 1693 is capable of operating reliably over long periods of time in order to simulate a variety of nuclear materials, systems and processes. The safety regime of QUADTECH 1693 is designed around standard safety practices and requires strict adherence to safety guidelines. 1693 is an evolutionary design, allowing for a wide range of research activities. It is composed of a stainless steel hermetically sealed, water-cooled core, a shielded enclosure, housing, and internal partitioning, along with associated instrumentation and control systems. The reactor's core is separated into four independent coolant channels, each approximately 7.5 cm in diameter and over 2m in length, and each coolant channel is fitted with cooling tubes secured to a circular Dipper Disk which allows for the immersion of the selected nuclear fuels and experiments into the reactor core. GENRAD / QUADTECH 1693 is also equipped with a number of safety and security systems designed to maintain the safety of workers and the environment. These include a radiation monitoring system, a neutron flux and dose rate monitor, a boron concentration monitor, and several emergency shut-down systems such as scram release circuits, water supply systems and emergency power supplies. The key features of GENRAD 1693 are its vessel and core design. The core comprises of an inner and an outer reactivity core set in a cistern. It is designed to hold the necessary circulating fluids, both coolant and moderator, as well as fissile material, separated by a sealed bore that contains the control rods. It further includes a central reflector, neutron absorbers and special features that allow for the use of special uranium-based fuels. In terms of temperature and pressure control, the system is capable of generating a temperature of up to 400 ºC and a pressure of up to 200 Bar. It is designed to operate under these conditions for a period of time without any safety or environmental issues.
