GENUS LYNX3 Nuclear Reactor is a Heavy Water Cooled Reactor (HWCR) used for research and development purposes. It is a full-size pool-type reactor that can generate up to 20 megawatts (MW) of thermal power, and is the first new-generation reactor in the world to attain full safety features, with emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) and other safety systems. The reactor was developed by Nuscale Power Inc., a subsidiary of Fluor Corp. and was designed to produce electricity in an environmentally friendly way. The reactor is composed of a core, pool tank, control rod assemblies and heat transfer systems. The core has up to 32 fuel assemblies and makes use of low enriched uranium dioxide fuel (LEU), which produces low levels of radiation and reduces the chance of a nuclear incident. The reactor core is submerged in a pool of sodium-potassium coolant and pressure water at a temperature of 15°C in the tank below ground level. The water is then heated via the nuclear fission reaction in the core and when the coolant is heated to 290°C by the nuclear reaction, it transfers the heat to a steam generator, which is in turn used to produce steam for electricity generation. The reactor also utilizes a secondary loop coolant system, which helps to control core temperatures. The control rod assemblies are designed to control the power levels within the reactor core. When more power is needed they move down and increase the amount of fission occurring in the core by increasing the number of neutrons encouraged to react with the fuel. These assemblies are retracted when less power is desired and neutrons are removed from the fuel. The heat transfer systems are necessary to ensure that the fuel within the core does not over heat and cause a meltdown. These systems are composed of two main subsystems, the primary and the secondary. The primary loop is composed of two pumps, the Coolant Holding Tank and the Primary Heat Exchanger. The primary loop pumps the coolant to the reactor where it transfers the heat from the core to the heat exchanger. The secondary loop then moves the heat from the exchanger to the steam generator. LYNX3 Heavy Water Cooled Reactor is designed to provide a clean, efficient and safe source of energy production. With advanced safety features and multiple systems designed to maintain control of core temperatures, this reactor provides an environmentally responsible approach to energy production.
