JEL / JUSUNG Eureka is a next-generation nuclear reactor that has been developed by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and can safely add additional fuel to the reactor core during operation. It is the first in the world to employ a sealed fuel design and is capable of reaching over 4.5 GW in power generation. The combination of an advanced reactor design and a sealed fuel method enables high safety standards and long-term operation. JEL Eureka reactor is a pressurized water reactor (PWR). The reactor core is equipped with an inner cylindrical fuel-storage vessel (FV), an outer cylindrical assembly space (AS) and an annular reflector (AR). This combination ensures that the reactor is able to maintain the fuel temperature and ensure the safety of the core. Additionally, it is equipped with a double-wall fuel-storage vessel, an intermediate vessel and an inner and outer core-coolant pump to minimize the risk of any fuel leaks. The reactor operates in three stages: Active Operation, Fueling, and Recharging. During Active Operation, the reactor controls the reactivity of the core by moving control rods and additional fueling is not necessary. This allows the reactor to safely operate and reach its peak power output more quickly. During Fueling, additional fuel is introduced into the core through the sealed fuel vessel. Finally, during Recharging, spent fuel is removed from the core and replaced with fresh fuel. The reactor is designed to take advantage of advanced technologies to ensure that it is safe, reliable, and fuel efficient. For example, the core has vacuum-sealed tubes to prevent any material from entering the reactor core and is also equipped with an automated emergency shutdown system to further ensure safety. Additionally, the reactor uses anti-diffusion fuel which increases fuel efficiency as well as reducing waste by up to 99%. JUSUNG Eureka reactor is equipped with advanced safety systems, a custom fuel-storage method, and efficient fuel-use technology. Its design ensures the highest levels of safety and its capability to add fresh fuel during active operation increases its efficiency. With the goal of achieving long-term power generation, the reactor is an example of a successful next-generation nuclear technology.
