JEL / JUSUNG TiN is a nuclear reactor developed by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) for research purposes and nuclear-based technologies commercialization. The acronym JUSUNG stands for "JEonju Light Water Reactor" and it is a thermal-neutron, third-generation, open pool-type, light-water reactor. The core of JEL / JUSUNGJEL TiN reactor has an annular design and is constructed by tying an inner core made of an UO2-Ag blend and an outer core made of an UO2-Zr blend. The inner core is made to be more moderated through the addition of Ag, while the outer core is more neutronically efficient few due to the Zr addition. This hybrid core design increases the thermal efficiency of the reactor compared to a UO2-only core. The envelope of core consists of a graphite, stainless steel, and aluminum block with radiation shielding. The core is cooled using two pressurized water loops. The primary loop circulating the reactor coolant, and the secondary loop used for conveying the thermal energy to the reactor equipment. The reactor also utilizes a forced circulation design, instead of a natural circulation design, in order to improve the reactor's safety performance. The main safety feature of JUSUNG TiN reactor is the inclusion of a Reactor Core Isolation Cooling (RCIC) system. The RCIC unit can passively insert sodium-bearing coolant into the primary loop of the reactor, if the primary loop temperature exceeds a certain threshold. This prevents a fuel melt-down due to reactor over-heating. JUSUNGTiN reactor also contains a Residual Heat Removal (RHR) machine in order to facilitate the cool-down of reactor core in a safe manner in cases of emergency or other undesired scenarios. The RHR tool can be initiated manually by the operating crew, or automatically triggered by the reactor safety monitoring asset. Finally, JEL / JUSUNGJEL / JUSUNG TiN reactor has an integrated advanced safety model, which is comprised of a set of computers connected to hundreds of detectors throughout the reactor and the safety systems. This equipment constantly monitors the reactor, and takes actions to maintain its safe operation. In summary, JEL TiN reactor has a range of design attributes and safety mechanisms to ensure a safe and efficient operation. The hybrid-core design coupled with the use of pressurized water cooling, allows the reactor to have higher thermal efficiency compared to purely UO2-based cores, making the reactor ideal for research and commerialization applications. Furthermore, the incorporation of the RCIC and RHR systems ensures the reactor is safe to operate under any condition.
