KOKUSAI Aldinna is a high temperature reactor designed to efficiently produce thermal energy in the form of both electricity and heat. Featuring a forced-cooling thorium-fueled modular fuel core, Aldinna is a light water reactor designed to function in a closed loop equipment. This means that the water used to cool the system is different from the water used to circulate in the reactor core. The closed loop unit has a number of benefits, most notably its high energy efficiency. Additionally, as the water is continuously recycled throughout the machine, the risk of contamination is minimized. KOKUSAI Aldinna is built using two types of reactor vessels. The first vessel is filled with thorium-based fuel and moderated by natural circulation. In the second vessel, light water is used to both cool and act as a blanket of moderation. The combination of these two vessels allows for greater efficiency of the reactor and allows for higher thermodynamic efficiency. At the heart of Aldinna is its thermal transfer tool, which is responsible for circulating heat from the reactor core to the heat exchangers. The heat exchangers are then responsible for transferring the heat to a receptacle, such as an environmental heat reservoir or a district heating asset. The model is pressurized and contains a copy of the reactor's safety systems, designed to keep the equipment in check throughout its entire operation. In terms of fuel, KOKUSAI Aldinna utilizes a uranium-based fuel as well as thorium-based fuel discs, which are placed against the reactor's inner core wall. By combining these two fuels and by moderating their consumption via the reactor's control system, Aldinna is able to operate at a maximum fuel temperature of 600oC and at a rated thermal power of 795MW. The benefits of KOKUSAI Aldinna are numerous and include its flexibility, the ability to quickly adjust output and the high operational safety. In addition, the modular design of the reactor and the use of natural circulation ensure the safety of the staff, as well as of the environment by minimizing the risk of contamination.
