TES Challenger HT (High Temperature) Reactor is a one-of-a-kind high temperature and thermal energy research reactor. It is the first of its kind and has the highest thermal performance rating of any high temperature reactor worldwide. The reactor is unique in that it can produce temperatures over 1000 °C as well as the highest temperatures in any reactor worldwide. This is achieved through the combination of high pressures and thermonuclear reactions. It is designed to explore the thermal characteristics of fuel materials at high temperatures, as well as to support nuclear reactor research and development. The core of the reactor is composed of two coolant loops and a sub-leg fuel grid. The hot coolant loop passes through the core of the reactor and returns at the end of the reactor, while the cold loop begins at the top of the reactor and returns after passing through the core. The fuel grid is composed of six legs consisting of hexagonal-shaped uranium fuel preforms. These fuel preforms are used to contain small amounts of fuel and bind the reactivity within the reactor. The fuel grid also acts as a support for the radioactive fuel elements. The reactor has a control system which includes a reactor vessel head, control rods, and a safety system. The reactor can be operated with either manual or automatic control and a variety of safety systems to ensure safe operation. Challenger HT Reactor is capable of working in several different regimes of operation. For instance, it can be operated in a critical power mode (full power mode), which is most often used for research and development operations. It can also be operated in a sub-critical power mode, which is used for testing fuels and materials at low power levels. Finally, TES Challenger HT can operate in a Zero Power Mode, which is used for safety and testing purposes.
