TES Challenger HTI is a gas-cooled, high temperature nuclear reactor designed and developed by Toshiba Energy Systems and Solutions Corporation. It is a commercial version of the company's experimental High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR). The HTI has been developed to serve as a reliable and cost-effective power source for high temperature industrial processes. It is a heterogeneous reactor that uses ceramic Pebble Bed fuel elements and has a core structure with a thermal output of up to 60 MW thermal energy. This reactor type consists of a central cylindrical core, surrounded by a shield plug. The core has an outer wall and an inner core. The inner core contains the fuel elements that provide the power and the heat output to the equipment. Inside the core, the fuel elements are held together in between a number of moderator blocks. TES Challenger reactor core is designed to operate at temperatures between 700 and 1100 °C and is capable of providing a steady supply of heat or electricity to high temperature industrial processes. The reactor can heat a medium directly and/or generate steam to power a turbine that produces electricity. The heat from the reactor is used to generate steam for thermal power plants, to heat industrial furnaces, and for other industrial applications. The control system of Challenger HTI is unique in the nuclear industries. It features several functions such as temperature control, power rate control, measurement of core parameters and instrumentation, and remote unit monitoring. The temperature of the fuel elements is monitored to ensure safe operation of the reactor. The control machine also has a safety shutdown tool to safeguard against any safety incidents. In addition to its safety features, the reactor design has an enhanced heat production (ΔT) ratio, which is higher than that of other reactors. This increase in ΔT allows the HTI to provide high temperature energy to industrial applications. It is also designed to be operable in a range of hot spot temperatures and power levels, providing flexibility in its versatility and use. TES Challenger HTI is a robust, highly prefabricated and low footprint reactor design, making it a competitive solution for high temperature process heat generation. It offers a range of advantages, including a reduction in capital and operating costs, shorter construction times, and greater energy efficiency. With its unique advantages, the reactor can be expected to provide a reliable and economic source of power for years to come.
