TOSHIBA EGV-28FM is a compact, self-contained, and modular modular type nuclear reactor (MTR) equipment. It is designed for the distributed generation of electricity in remote locations. EGV-28FM utilizes passive safety systems, and therefore does not require additional active safety systems for providing reactor safety. TOSHIBA EGV-28FM reactor core is made up of natural uranium fuel, with zinc oxide moderator, and uranyl nitrate cooling jacket. It has a rated thermal power of 28thermal megawatts (MWt) and a thermal efficiency of 37%. The reactor vessel is the most important component of the nuclear power plant, in which the reactor core resides inside it. The reactor is controlled and cooled by a series of three circulation loops. The primary loop passes the coolant through the reactor core and the secondary loop is isolated by a series of steam generators, by means of which the heat generated by the reactor core is utilized to generate electricity. The tertiary loop provides makeup water to the primary loop. The key safety feature of EGV-28FM is the space-saving fuel core configuration that results in a low thermal power density (7 kW/cm3). The high thermal efficiency of the fuel core allows for a high burnup of 20 MWd/kgU and increases fuel utilization whilst significantly reducing the chances of the reactor core overheating.
